Biography: Jian Wang
Jian Wang received the Ph.D. degree in physical electronics from the Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 2008. He worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the optical communications laboratory in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering of the Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Southern California,Los Angeles, California, USA, from 2009 to 2011. He is currently a professor at the Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China. He is the Assistant Director for the Department of Optoelectronic Devices &Integration of Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics.

Jian Wang’s professional activities have included: Member of IEEE and OSA, Guest Editor of a special issue on High-Speed Optical Transmission and Processing in Frontiers of Optoelectronics, Session Chair of Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP),International Photonics and OptoElectronics Meetings (POEM), International Conference on Advancements in Information Technology (ICAIT), Technical Program Committee Member of Wireless and Optical Communication Conference (WOCC), International Conference on Optical Communications and Networks (ICOCN), ACP and ICAIT, Frequent reviewers for 20 journals such as Optics Letters, Optics Express, Optical Materials Express, Journal of the Optical Society of America B, Journal of Lightwave Technology, etc.
Jian Wang has been the principal investigator of several projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the main participant of projects funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and National Science Foundation (NSF) in USA.
Jian Wang has devoted his research efforts to innovations in photonic integrated devices and frontier technologies for high-speed optical communications and optical data processing,including: i) Design, modeling and fabrication of photonic integrated devices, such as silicon waveguides, lithium niobate waveguides, photonic crystal waveguides, plasmonic waveguides, microring resonators, metamaterials, graphene, specially-designed optical fibers, etc. ii) Frontier technologies for high-speed optical communications, such as space-division multiplexing (SDM), mode-division multiplexing (MDM), optical communications using orbital angular momentum (OAM), etc. iii) Frontier technologies for high-speed optical data processing, such as optical switching, optical logic/computing, optical format conversion, optical regeneration, optical data exchange, etc.
Jian Wang has more than 150 publications in total, including 2 book chapters, one special issue, one review article, 11 invited talks/papers, 3 postdeadline papers, and more than 70 journal papers published on Science, Nature Photonics, Optics Express, Optics Letters, etc.The work published on Nature Photonics which is the #1 downloaded Nature Photonics article in late June and early July 2012, has been selected by Nature Photonics editors for press release, interview, and News & Views article, and reported by BBC News, NewScientist, PhysicsWorld, and Phys.Org in UK, ScienceDaily and IEEE Spectrum in USA,and ScienceNet in China. Jian Wang, together with Alan E. Willner, has also been invited to write an applied physics perspective on the Science magazine.
