Zhu and his group study the design, synthesis and application of fluorescent molecular switches. They are indispensable for super-resolution fluorescent (SURF) imaging at nanoscales. These organic molecular photoswitches typically possess photoswitchable fluorescence. The photoswitchable fluorophores could advance the resolution of optical imaging down to nanoscales, which is promising as an alternative to electron microscopy for characterization of cellular and subcellular structures, organic polymer and inorganic nanostructures.
