Jiang Desheng

Jiang Desheng, male, born in Wuhan, Hubei Province in March, 1949, graduated from the physical teachers’ class in Hubei University of Architecture Engineering and he was elected as the academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2007. He is now the chief professor, the director and doctoral supervisor of Fiber Optic Sensing Technology Center, Wuhan University of Technology.
Professor Jiang Desheng has been engaged in the research on optical fiber sensing materials and processing novel technologies for a long time. Through disciplines crossing and technology integration, he systematically studies the micromachining of novel photochromic and fiber materials, and optical fiber sensing systems. He has also put forward and constructed the new research method and theory technology system of optical fiber sensing materials, devices and systems. In the meanwhile, he has made lots of engineering researches and formed complete technologies and devices with independent intelligent property right that breaks the foreign blockade and monopolization on techniques and took the lead in realizing industrialization of researches. His achievements are widely applied in multiple critical engineering projects in China.
Novel photochromic material is the basis and guide for developing new generation optical sensing technologies. He successfully organized the research on the five categories of novel phototropic, including blackbody high temperature radiation material, oxygen photochromic, humidity photochromic, temperature photochromic and Raman enhanced active material, and he won the second prize of national prize for progress in science and technology in 2002.
Micromachining of fiber material is the key core technology of manufacturing optical fiber sensors. He has systematically studied and provided multiple micromachining methods of fiber material. For the first time, he provided and successfully manufactured the encoded fiber grating, solving the problem in the foreign common fiber grating that cannot be monitored in large capacity and multipoint distribution. These two inventions are exclusive in China and occupy important positions world wide. They have provided the technical support to the long-term safety monitoring of the application of the fiber grating technology in China’s major projects and important equipment. This achievement has won the second prize of National Prize for Progress In Science and Technology in 2004.
He pioneered the fiber grating heat fire alarm technology and system in the worldu, breaking the more than 20-year long technology and market monopoly of the foreign Raman optical fiber fire alarm technology. It has been successfully applied in China’s four strategic petroleum reserves and 90% of petrochemical oil depots in China. In the meanwhile, he has obtained notable achievements in the fire safety monitoring in more than 50 tunnels like the longest tunnel Zhongnanshan Tunnel at home. This achievement has obtained the second prize of National Award for Technological Invention in 2007. Other optical fiber sensing system products developed by him are also successfully applied in the long-term safety monitoring of about 20 large-scale bridges, dams, electric power facilities and mechanized equipment, and he has provided the new generation safety monitoring technology for China’s major projects and important equipment.
For more than 20 years of hard-work in optical fiber sensing field, Professor Jiang Desheng has been doing scholarly research rigorously, working hard on practice, having the courage to exploit, continuously innovating, cultivating younger generations with all his heart, and widely carrying out academic exchange both at home and abroad. He has made great contribution to the development of the new generation sensing technology in China.
In recent ten years, he has won 1 second prize of National Award for Technological Invention, 2 second prizes and 1 third prize of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology; 3 first prizes at the provincial and ministerial level, applied 16 patents with 5 ones authorized and one winning Chinese Patent Award of Excellence; and published one monograph and 183 theses. In 2001, he won the honor title of National Outstanding Teacher, and in 2005 he won the title of National Advanced Worker.
